Dr. Sreekumar Vellalath

Sreekumar  received his M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry from University of Calicut and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST-CSIR) under the supervision of Dr. Vijay Nair. Following postdoctoral studies at Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung, Mülheim with Professor Benjamin List as an AvH fellow, he joined the research group of Professor Daniel Romo at Texas A&M University and then moved to Baylor University as a research associate in 2015. His current research focuses on the development of organocatalytic cascades and utilization of CO2 for natural product derivitization.

Synthesis of beta-lactones involving a stepwise Zn-mediated carboxylation of allylic bromides with CO2 delivering gama,delta-unsaturated carboxylic acids and a subsequent bromolactonization is reported.
